Below you will find detailed descriptions of all the Business and Computer courses I have taught. Over the span of my career, I have taught around 20 sections of Computer and/or Business courses. While a few courses brought specific learning outcomes with them, I created and taught the curriculum for numerous courses and created the learning outcomes for many of them as well.

Business Principles

Business Principles provides an introduction to fundamental business operations. The course provides insight into the global economy as well as explores management, marketing, economics, human resources, ethics and financial principles.

Business Communications

Presents the basic concepts of technical writing and effective speaking techniques. Topics include the writing process; writing memos; e-mails; business letters; writing formal reports; speech preparation; communication with employers; formal presentations and the use of graphic aids.

Marketing Principles

Marketing Principles is designed to teach students the fundamental marketing terms and concepts used in contemporary marketing. The marketing approach includes defining the market environment, market research, and the marketing mix (4 P’s: product, price,

promotion, and place). Students will also analyze marketing plans.

Macroeconomics

This course will introduce the students to issues in macro theory through the use of models, principles and econometric analysis. Topics will include: opportunity costs, supply and demand, market equilibrium and the assessment of GNP/GDP. Discussions will focus on the impact of business cycles, the role of government in the economy, the financial system, the role of monetary policy and the major issues facing the U.S. economy.

Business Information Systems Principles

This foundational course provides an introduction to information systems and its role in business. Students will learn fundamental topics on information system technologies, business applications, systems development, and IT ethics commonly used in business.

Office Applications – Word Processing & Keyboarding

In this course, students will learn how to perform advanced information-processing tasks using Microsoft Word. Students will also practice their keyboarding skills through timed tests and apply this learning to complete assignments in a timely manner.

Office Applications – Spreadsheets & Databases

Students explore the more advanced concepts utilized in spreadsheet and database technology. A continuation of the students’ proficiency development using the integrated office suite is accomplished through the application of advanced skills. Students will be prepared to take the MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) Certification exams for Excel and Access.

Microsoft Outlook

Presents the basic operation of Microsoft Outlook and the integration of desktop applications in organizational and communications tasks.

Microsoft Word

This course shows students how to use Microsoft Word to create, format, save, and print documents. Students will learn about margins, headers and footers, tables, mail merge documents, images, and forms.

Microsoft Access

Presents an introduction to the core concepts of Microsoft Access and the skill areas of planning and creating a database, creating tables and forms, and entering and querying data. Also provides an introduction to creating and enhancing a report, working with queries, integrating data, modifying and enhancing tables and forms, and working with Access tools.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Students will learn to create presentations, create custom backgrounds, color schemes, and animations, and give a presentation with a PowerPoint backup.

Windows Professional

Presents the concepts and skills necessary to install and configure Microsoft Windows Professional on stand-alone and client computers that are part of a workgroup or domain.

Computer Essentials

Students become competent in the basic operation of the Windows operating system, the EIT network, email basics, and effective use of the internet.

Computer Applications for Designers

Presents basic usage and concepts including proper keyboarding techniques utilizing alphabetic and numeric keys, symbols, and the numeric keypad. Students will also become competent in the basic operation of the Windows operating system, the EIT network, email basics, and effective use of the internet.

Networking Fundamentals

Provide students with the key concepts of data communication. It gives the student an understanding of how data is transferred over Local and Wide Area Networks. The course provides the student with the key knowledge to monitor and troubleshoot networks.

Career / Professional Development

In this course, students will be challenged to use their knowledge, skills and behaviors developed over the course of their program studies to solve real-world problems in their career discipline. Students will develop strategies for lifelong learning to achieve career and life pursuits. Additionally, students will finalize and defend their ePortfolio to demonstrate the achievement of their Program and Institutional Outcomes.

Strategies for Success

This course presents students with a framework for examining their lives from a self-discovery perspective. Students will discover their own learning styles, strengths and weaknesses, learn to set goals effectively and practice academic and life skills.

Math for Welders

A study of trigonometric functions: right triangle, functions of angles of any size, sine and cosine laws, and vector analysis.
